Ethno England – an introduction to Tandem Collective’s Global Music Exchange

Ethno is the ultimate celebration of diversity It’s so inspirational You know it’s a treasure trove what people
know here People from all over the world understanding
each other and getting to know each other through music We are here this week on the site of Tandem Festival with an incredible bunch of musicians
from all over the world to show what people from different countries can do when they
work together and when they make a family and when they forget about where they’re from
and they just play music Different kinds of music, different kinds
of playing instruments, singing, and it’s really beautiful seeing this happening here Ethno is a residential camp for young musicians who are interested in playing traditional
music They come with a piece that they want to share
and they teach it peer to peer They get the chance to see what it’s like
to be a teacher then they are guided into arranging it as a group and then they go out
and they share it It really gives me energy to discover new
kinds of music Over this week forming a family Astonishing, it was probably one of the best things I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot
of music Before the encore I was actually moved to
tears it was that good I think Ethno changed my life There’s a thing that’s called the Ethno addiction, and that’s real. That’s really true, yeah. I can definitely say I am quite Ethno addicted! This is my very first one, in fact, like ever Playing instruments, singing, I saw many instruments I didn’t know and really many nice people here and it’s for
me the best thing the people I am having the opportunity to talk and to meet this is really
a rich human experience I came here as a volunteer just to see how
it was like and I felt a bit insecure because I haven’t picked up my cello in quite a while
so I didn’t bring it but now I feel like I want to pick it up again and take lessons
and start playing and go to Ethno Brazil maybe next year The informality of it is very appealing because you know we don’t work with written sheet
music, we kind of work with forms It’s just something people need in their lives We hope the participants come away having had an incredible experience like the first experience I had when I came to Ethno for the first time and it changed my life
We are doing something that’s bringing people together when there is so much that’s trying
to keep people apart You look at the world around us and you think there’s another direction we could be going in and I think Ethno is doing that It’s really cool, I can recommend it to everyone
